Burning causes haze and emits harmful pollutants. I remember the worst haze in Singapore occured when jungles were burnt in Indonesia and Malaysia. Planes had to be rescheduled in Kuala Lumpur because the visibility was so bad.
Here in Auckland, you can collect all your garden cuttings and waste and put them in a yellow bin, The "green cycle" yellow truck will come and collect your clippings. They will take them to be chipped or composted.

I like to compost little yard trimmings myself. But for bigger branches, I wish there was "green cycle" pick-up in this area like you have in Auckland.

ReplyDeleteWe have a green bin and a black bin and they are taken away on alternative weeks. The black bin is for general waste, stuff that cant be recycled but the green bin is for garden waste, household waste which includes cooked food, bones etc and corrugated cardboard. The contents of the green bin are used to make compost which can be collected free of charge!
ReplyDeleteWe also recycle glass, plastic cartons, paper, normal cardboard and tin on a weekly basis.
Ideally in Malaysia there are three bins - for newspapers - for tins (recyclables) and for non-recyclables...to be taken away.
ReplyDeleteBut we have not started a compost bin yet...We are waiting for a politician to have the glory of "initiating " it.
Meanwhile it is always a "little" burning and a little home composting in the backyard.

Here we cannot burn outside without a permit, no trash can be burned at all but goes to the recycling center. We recycle aluminum, plastics, newspapers, magazines, glass and have separate areas to dispose of construction materials and refrigerators and stoves. Every bit helps!
