Sunday stills: Trees

Hi Linda,

Random trees are easy here, but following a tree for one year may be hard, perhaps we can follow it every season, and then have a great finale.

Sara from Punkin’s Patch suggested this weeks challenge……great minds think alike because I was out on a little photo trip and thought the same thing. Trees…….naked in this part of the world yet. I think a four seasons challenge with the same tree would be great too in the future.

Sunday Stills: texture

I often blindfold my students and get them to feel, smell, mould an object and then talk about it. It is amazing how much fun they have. These, I think is texture.

Sunday stills: Amethyst

Sunday Stills, the next challenge: Shiney Things
Posted in Sunday Stills, Sunday Stills Challenge of the Week with tags photo challenge, Sunday Stills on September 4, 2011 by Ed

So lets see what ya’ll can find thats bright and shiney. Sunlight is a must for this challenge or at least a good light source..:-)

http://sundaystills.wordpress.com/

When I was little, our family was given a shiney Amethyst by our maternal grand dad. We were so happy thinking we were the proud owner of a diamond. Bling! bling! bling!

It was very big and fitted in the palm of our hand. One day, our uncle's family came to visit. Out came our diamond and boasting how our grand dad went prospecting in the mountains and found lots of diamonds.

Before we could realise it, this little cousin grabbed the diamond out of our hands and threw it to the bush at the back of our house. There was a creek swollen with flood water. Everyone including both sets of parents went to look for it. But Alasm was in vain.

We cried, the cousin got a scolding. Then came the bigger disappointment. Mum said it wasn't a a diamond. It was a false diamond. An Amethyst I know today. There are a lot of amethyst here in New Zealand, when I see them, I can still see the shot put arm movement of my cousin.

sunday stills: Your favourite place: New Zealand

My favourite place is New Zealand.

It is a small dot in the South Pacific Ocean, but we are not isolated. Container ships like this come and bring us things we need and take away our produce to the rest of the world.

We pride ourselves to be clean and green. I have seen many outdoor furniture made by natural material, some without lead filled paints.

We have many nationalities living in relatively harmony. We have many Polynesians from Samoa, Tonga, Cook islands, Fiji. This weekend, they are presenting Pasifika again to the rest of the world.

We are surrounded by the sea, the seafood is abundant. The Maoris tell you that you will never starve in New Zealand.

To me, the best bit is within the inner city, you get stretches of native bush where you can unwind.

This video was shot by a young budding 14 year boy which depicts very much of the New Zealand landscape. The country nurtures creativity. He is my son.

Sunday Stills, the next challenge: Your Favorite Place

This will be fun as it can be anyplace you have been or in your local area. Wherever you feel at peace or just like to relax..:-)

clean clean New Zealand.

I have lived in a hot tropical Island of Borneo.
I have lived in Freezing Canadian Winter.
I have climbed the steps to the Statue of Liberty.
I have lived in the ultra modern urban skyscraper city of Singapore.

But this is my favourite place,
New Zealand which I call home.

Where the National Anthem still calls " God to defend our Country."

Yesterday, the country was galvanized and wore red and black to show out support to our earth quake ravished countrymen, the Canterbrians. Groups raised funds, and I was pleasantly shocked a secondary school raised more that $13,000. This is what hugs my heart strings.

Sunday stills: Hats

Everyday, in August, we have daffodil day, we support the Cancer cause, and in school, we are encouraged to wear yellow. I put a yellow band on this hat when I go to school. I also wear green and yellow.

In February, on Waitangi Day, I join my friend Ngarimu in the Zero Waste Program. During a family festival, we teach the public on recycling and reusing. Ngarimu gives us this grass cowboy hats.

Sunday Stills, the next challenge: Hats

I wear hats in the summer. New Zealand had a high UV level because of the hole in the ozone level on top of us.

These two hats are special to me.

Sunday Stills: cups or mugs

Everyone enjoys a good cup of Joe or Tea in the morning, so what is your favorite mug or cup?

You can also include antique cups, or odd coffee mugs you might have for a bit of fun..:-)
http://sundaystills.wordpress.com/

Hi Ed,
I was busy with a project that I forgot to check what the theme was. I thought it would be great to photograph the odd shapes and sizes of the fifty mugs in the staff room. But I am at home, and it is the weekend. I could wait until our Monday, your Sunday.

Then right in front of me, on my computer is this very special mug. No one has drank a drop from it. It's a souvenir cup. The girls were eleven and seven. We were at this tourist place at Clarke Quay in Singapore. There was a promotion. You could have a photo taken and printed on the mug. You choose the reverse print. It was quite expensive and I was quite reluctant to pay for it. Now I am glad I did. The girls have grown and left home. I look at the mug and think how quickly time has flown.

Sunday Stills: Meal time

http://sundaystills.wordpress.com

This is my own recipe of chilli tuna brinjal/eggplant. Instead of roasting the eggplant like the Mexicans do, or frying the with a lot of oil, I steam them in the rice cooker when I am cooking rice. When the rice is cooked, the egg plants are relatively soft.

In a pan, I brown chopped garlic, onion and ginger. Add the tuna and egg plant. There should be enough salt from the tuna. Mix them together, serve with raw tomato and rice.

Here you are Ed, my take for mealtime with three foods. It has carbo, vegetables and meat/fish.

We, in New Zealand, are at the beginning of spring. My archives are not very good.

Sunday stills: Letter S

This is a man made spider, and I am sure it is this spider who frightened Little Miss Muffet. Spiders own a tiny room in the children's Sunday school room at Mt Albert Baptist Church.

We went to the Takapuna beach, the weather was still cold and raining occasionally. Mr. Coffee man wasn't getting much business. He was demonstrating throwing up a stick with two sticks to his lady friend.

We treated our Singapore guest to a Chinese dimsum lunch. This visitor travels all over the world. We were very happy to hear from him that Auckland's dimsum is even better than Singapore's. Grand Harbour Chinese Restaurant has become Auckland’s premier source for fine Chinese dining. We enjoyed the Steamed dimsum and I thought of my mum who used to make our fav, HARGAU.

We drove past this, and I snapped it in the car. So the photo isn't the best. In the old days, a bar usually had rooms upstairs.
Lone Star Café and Bar is situated in an iconic general store that dates back to 1910 on Hauraki Corner, the Takapuna branch of the popular Lone Star Café and Bar chain has a great kids' menu and also allows BYO wine. The perfect spot for sunset watching and great, no nonsense comfort food.

My guest heard that Auckland is known as a city where there are four seasons in a block, which is worst than what I had been told as four seasons in a day. Here is one sole sail boat in the harbour.

Auckland is known as the city of sails. But yesterday, except for the lone sail boat, the marina showed that the sails were down, and yachties were no where to be seen.

At Windsor Reserve, they were building shelters for the Dog's big day out. 1500 dogs turned up.

These two seagulls sashayed to attract my attention knowing I was going to make them famous.

When I was growing up in Borneo, Sibu town is ninety miles from the sea. I always dreamed of going to the sea side and picking up sea shells. Now, I am so fortunate that the sea is just twenty minutes away,

I figure since its the last challenge for September we can do a letter challenge for next week. The only rule this week is that it has to be THINGS that start with the letter “S’ and NO ARCHIVES. Have fun and I’ll see ya’ll next week. Ed

We had a visitor yesterday. The weather had been kind, and we went out to the beach and took lots of photos. Thanks Ed, for an easy challenge.
