Save our world/ mellowyellow Monday :no mining
A piece of beautiful New Zealand.
Thousands protested against the Government s mining plans

At the end of April, I posted that thousand s march to protest the Government's intention to open up conservation land for mining. Today, the Government has backed down and scrapped these plans. Ka pai and good job to people power.

The Government had proposed opening up 7000 hectares of conservation land in the Coromandel, Great Barrier Island and Paparoa National Park to prospecting for valuable minerals.
That land is protected from mining under schedule four of the Crown Minerals Act, and more than 30,000 submissions were made on a public consultation document - nearly all of them opposed to changing its status.
About 50,000 people signed a Green Party petition against it, while an estimated 40,000 marched in protest in Auckland.
The land is protected against mining under schedule four of the Crown Minerals Act, and the proposals provoked furious opposition from the public and conservation lobby groups.

All what the governments think of is money, money, money when they can get it. Good that this time they didn't win ! Would have been a pity to destroy nature for mining !
It's good all the people unite to set up the rally against destroying the mining world, hope the goverment listen and answer what people wants. Nice post Ms. Ann
yep, environment comes first and money can be churned out from other sources.
The people of New Zealand are good activists and protetctors of the earth!! What is the use of protetcting that land if then the politicians are just going to overturn the paperwork? This is a wonderful story where.
I support this movement. Mining does lot of harm than good.
I believe people power truly exists in truly democratic countries in the caucasian regions unlike the pseudo ones run by asian governments.
GREAT JOB!
Salute to New Zealand Government...
Thanks for dropping by, Ann.
I've just known that there's the same traditional decoration in Sarawak...
Inspiring story, Ann. I just hope those people demonstrating also share the responsibility and stop being materialistic and wasteful. That stuff that is mined does not just go to government coffers. It goes to satisfy market demands... for development, for goods, for whatever.
I myself would agree this kind of movement. Great post!
