Save the world: Revegetate beaches and co-operate with signs

On the Gold Coast, the council was trying to re vegetate the beach and protect their dunes. It can only succeed when people co-operate. Eveyone should do their bit.

Sunday Stills: cups or mugs

Everyone enjoys a good cup of Joe or Tea in the morning, so what is your favorite mug or cup?

You can also include antique cups, or odd coffee mugs you might have for a bit of fun..:-)

Hi Ed,
I was busy with a project that I forgot to check what the theme was. I thought it would be great to photograph the odd shapes and sizes of the fifty mugs in the staff room. But I am at home, and it is the weekend. I could wait until our Monday, your Sunday.

Then right in front of me, on my computer is this very special mug. No one has drank a drop from it. It's a souvenir cup. The girls were eleven and seven. We were at this tourist place at Clarke Quay in Singapore. There was a promotion. You could have a photo taken and printed on the mug. You choose the reverse print. It was quite expensive and I was quite reluctant to pay for it. Now I am glad I did. The girls have grown and left home. I look at the mug and think how quickly time has flown.

Friday shootout: Over your head.

Here up the cliff is the mouth of the cave where a million bats fly in and out. Unfortunately for us, it poured with heavy tropical torrential rain. The bats decided to stay dry and did not perform their welcoming dance for us.

Up on top of a tree, bug scientists tied bag with holes to trap insects so they could study them. Right now, in my teaching room, I have a worm farm which also doubles as a shield bug home. The kids love watching them. one of the shield bugs laid some eggs and some of them had hatched. I would loved to show you my curious kids, but I am not allowed to. I must remember to photograph the farm.

The tour guide told us to look up the tree, everyone did that and many took photos. I took a fellow traveler looking up and taking her photo.

When out and about on walks where do you look? What do you see or what catches your attention? We usually are looking in front of us, to the side or sometimes we look back. Unless you are a bird watcher, do you look up? Do you notice what is above your head way up high? Well here is your chance to get creative and show us what is UP in your town. Have fun shooters!

This theme gives me another opportunity to show case my trip to Mulu Caves in Borneo.

For another photo which I posted yesterday to my other site, please go to this link. I posted a big flock of pigoens flying which would suit this theme.

Outdoor wednesday: Giant tree

http://asoutherndaydreamer.blogspot.com

We went to the Tamborine Hills in Queensland. It was a pleasant walk in the bush. My son says, " The tree is this big."

The kauri tree in New Zealand are even bigger.

My world Tuesday: Spring in Australia

My nephew Lincoln turned ten. My sister Helen took this photo. I like the bokieh effect of the photo. She had him forcussed sharply and the blurry effect of the others. Of course, he was the birthday boy.

Save the world: wind farms

http://reducefootprints.blogspot.com/

Wind farms are the way to go. The water engineer took this photo when he was in Australia.

A wind farm is a group of wind turbines in the same location used for production of electric power. Individual turbines are interconnected with a medium voltage (usually 34.5 kV) power collection system and communications network. At a substation, this medium-voltage electrical current is increased in voltage with a transformer for connection to the high voltage transmission system.

How does wind farm compare with the traditional energy sources on environment?

The environmental effects of wind power upon greenhouse gases are minor; Wind power consumes no fuel, and emits no air pollution, unlike fossil fuel power sources. The energy consumed to manufacture and transport the materials used to build a wind power plant is equal to the new energy produced by the plant within a few months of operation.[10] Garrett Gross, a scientist from the University of Missouri–Kansas City, states, "The impact made on the environment is very little when compared to what is gained."[10] While a wind farm may cover a large area of land, many land uses such as agriculture are compatible.

Some people fear the turbines might kill birds and bats.

Is wind farm the way to go?
