Sunday Bridge: Bicycle outing.

An outing by Bicycles. Students of Kai Chung School.

I recounted the day 3 boys took me on a looooong bicycle ride to past the junction of Sibu and

Sarikei

Now no one remembers these 3 boys as they were younger than this group.

My thighs were sore as we cycled more than 15 kilometere.

When we came back, Mr Roddy Lau and the Chew Siblings (Peng,  leng, King, Lee, Kok)'s Dad

asked where I had been.  They couldn't believe I went with young students.

They must have thought I was this crazy Miss Chan and her bicycle trip to the San Ba aka

country.

Mr. Chew said I should have asked the boy in the shop to check over my bicycle and Mr Lau said

I was lucky I was not shot by the soldiers mistaken as a communists.

Thank Francis for bringing back memories. To the rest of the Kai Chung Lau Peng You, this was

the fun loving teacher, who came to your reunion, even though she didn't actually teach many of

you.

No one remembers these 3 boys as they were younger than this group.  But if anyone remembers,

I sure would like to tell them, THANKS!

Scenic Sunday: reflections of childhood in Borneo

Two very unusual things happened today.  Augustine Cheong, a fellow Facebook friend posted the above photo. At the background was a class 4 Government Quarter. A house I spent 6 years in two locations in Kanowit and in Sibu. I had been looking for this photo. I sent it to the few FB friends who lived in the vicinity  of Padang Road. Dorothy Abdullah was my one childhood friend. She lived 2 houses up from us. We played, my older sister E babysat for them.

This Cassia fistula or Golden shower tree, is a flowering tree of my youth. When I was five, we moved down from a small town to Sibu. We lived in the Government quarters off Race Course Road. In the section across the road, there was this big tree. When it bloomed, it had big flowing sprays of yellow flowers. When the wind blew, the petals will drop to the ground. Sometimes, a whole spray will fall. This is why it is called a Golden Shower tree.

In Sarawak, the tropical weather meant an afternoon shower. People did their laundry everyday and we didn't have driers or washing machines. My sweet memories of this tree was my sister Margaret and I would jump across the creek when the wind blew so we could retrieve those sprays. We played brides using them as wedding bouquets. My mum would scream at us to help her bring the washing in before the rains came. We didn't listen, playing was more important to us.

Dorothy, I can't remember if you too joined us chase these fallen blooms.

The other thing that happened was Dorothy said that her mum died yesterday. How great a coincidence is that, I haven't seen Dorothy since 1966, just a couple of month ago, I found her on Facebook, and  we updated each other with our news.

Well Dorothy,
Your tears will flow,
Let them flow,
Because you love her.

But be consoled that she is no longer  in pain.
If we look on the bright side,
Your Dad is welcoming her to Heaven.
And my parents are saying, welcome old neighbour.

FSO: January 4: Share Your Favorite Photos from 2012 -

Christine Maslowski had invited the water engineer to give his expert advice on some shoreline she and her friends were wanting to save.

My favourite photo goes to Christine who is not only fighting to save the shoreline of Whitford. For the last 10 years she has been fighting to save New Zealand Natives birds by setting traps against rodents like rats and stoats.

Here she was "wading" among the tall grass to check her bait. The reeds and grass make you itchy, but this doesn't faze Christine.

And protecting the area by gently reminding people not to take their dogs in the protected area. I would have shouting," Hey you, can't you read??" But she didn't.

January 4: Share Your Favorite Photos from 2012 - taken by you of course.

Photo-Hunting: Showing a glimpse of yourself

A photo showing the contentment of a child when she whispered " I love you. Mum"

I Love U Mum.

My artist Oliver's interpretation of the same theme.

Outdoor Wed: Playground in Sibu

22 years ago, revisiting Sibu, the town of my birth with my daughters.

Save the world/our world : picking up rubbish.

In New Zealand, you may own a beach front house, but you don't own the beach. Every now and then, in between houses, there are public access. Pt Chevalier is a fairly well off area, but people come from far and wide to the beach. They swim and have picnics and BBQs.

I was very impressed with two slightly old ladies. They were not dressed in beach attire. They walked the entire length of the beach picking up rubbish left by irresponsible beach goers. I didn't bring my camera to snap a photo.
