Save the world: wind farms

Wind farms are the way to go. The water engineer took this photo when he was in Australia.

A wind farm is a group of wind turbines in the same location used for production of electric power. Individual turbines are interconnected with a medium voltage (usually 34.5 kV) power collection system and communications network. At a substation, this medium-voltage electrical current is increased in voltage with a transformer for connection to the high voltage transmission system.

How does wind farm compare with the traditional energy sources on environment?

The environmental effects of wind power upon greenhouse gases are minor; Wind power consumes no fuel, and emits no air pollution, unlike fossil fuel power sources. The energy consumed to manufacture and transport the materials used to build a wind power plant is equal to the new energy produced by the plant within a few months of operation.[10] Garrett Gross, a scientist from the University of Missouri–Kansas City, states, "The impact made on the environment is very little when compared to what is gained."[10] While a wind farm may cover a large area of land, many land uses such as agriculture are compatible.

Some people fear the turbines might kill birds and bats.

Is wind farm the way to go?

Do you have many there? Gosh, you raise some really interesting questions! I never thought there was a down side to them!! Excellent research and point!!

I do think the wind farm is great and dont think any birds or bats will be killed because of it,I mean...look at it. its humongous, so cant imagine the birds flying to it...must be a mata sepet birds lol!!! I was reading a Readers Digest joke on the wind farm, about how an elderly women commented how much electricity needed to make them turn haha :) Happy week ahead.....

Sadly, there are people who oppose wind farms, saying that wind turbines are 'eyesores'.

This is a lovely post....I saw some in Cornwall too. But because of the hedgerows I could not take nice photos... a few blurry ones.

Hi Ann. I think wind farms are OK from the point of view of polution-free generation. I don't like them from an environmental point of view because they look ugly and are noisy, and only produce electricity when the wind is blowing! - Dave
