Anchovies anyone?
In Asia, like Thailand, Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, tiny fish are dried. In South east Asia, we call them ikan bilis, literally meaning tiny fish.
They used to be relatively cheap, but not any more. The saying goes," If I don't have money, I will eat ikan Bilis and salted fish,"
They can be cooked in many dishes and as a chutney.
These ones are flavoured in sugar and chilli and are from Thailand. I buy these from a Vietnamese grocery shop in Auckland and are eaten as a snack as is or an accompanishment to beer.
