Baby Mussels and barnacles

In the howling wind, and bitter cold, the water engineer took us to Laingholm beach in West Auckland. There were big beds of oysters, but nobody is harvesting them. Just across the other side of the bay is one of Auckland's Mangere seweage treatment plants. They discharge the end products into the bay.

This gem you see, is a tiny twig where baby mussels and barnacles are growing. I found it at the beach and took it to take to school to show my students.
