The convocation ceremonies are usually very long. The water engineer had to sit through many such ceremonies when he was teaching at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Some one likens the ceremony to putting a cap on bottles lining up on a conveyor belt.
The worst time was when my sister Margaret had come up from Christchurch to sit through 2 hours of mine, and 2 hours of the water engineer's ceremony in 1980.
