Bethells/Te Henga sand dunes
It's the challenge and thrill of climbing 1 tiny step up, and slipping two thirds down, and telling yourself," I can do it! I can do it!" that beckons you to be crazy to walk over a kilometer in the hot iron sand to do it over and over again.
After that you can cool off at the Lake Wainamu ("mosquito waters"). It is a fresh water 22-hectare lake fills a valley dammed by advancing sand dunes which are a dominant feature in the walk to the lake.
Or you can drive a short distance to Bethells Beach. Just remember to swim between the flags.
