Blog Action Day: Power of we, Save the world

In Auckland New Zealand, the Mt Albert Baptist Church has a project, Project Thailand.

It's my church.

One day, it was  water wednesday as part of our Thailand project. Itis for Thailand. We abstain from drinking anything but water and imaginewhat it is like in places where there no clean water. The Mt Albert Baptist Church sold shares to build a well in Thailand.

Community Development among Hill-Tribes

In the Northern areas of Thailand, the (mainly) animistic hill-tribe villages are without running water, sanitation, schools, medical clinics, and a local church. It is estimated that many of these families live on an annual income as low as $100NZD.
As a result of their extreme poverty and lack of citizenship, these people are often preyed upon by drug cartels and those in the sex trade.
In partnership with a cluster of like-minded kiwi churches, and in association with the agency Brighthope World and Integrated Tribal Development Programme (ITDP), we want to bring the gospel to the holistic needs of a cluster of local villages in both word and action through:
• provision of clean running water, sanitation and health education (with each church taking direct responsibility for one of these villages). A short-term team would work with local villages to dig trenches, pour concrete and set up a water supply.

We will have 10 folks heading off to Thailand next February

“The Power of We”

We choose this theme for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the popularity of the your suggestions; Community, Equality, Transparency/Anti-Corruption and Freedom, in our theme poll.
Secondly, The Power of We is a celebration of people working together to make a positive difference in the world, either for their own communities or for people they will never meet half way around he world.

Photohunt: Kitchen and hand

Here is my Italian flat-bottom Chinese Wok. It is meant to do everything from baking, boiling, stir frying, braising, pan frying and so on. In Chinese, they call it a ten thousand ability pot aka WAN NEN KUO. But the sales promotor at Yaohan saw that I wanted a flat bottom wok desperately, didn't bother to promote it's qualities to me. This Japanese store had long folded, but my Wok is still as good as ever. It's definitely worthed its money.

In Singapore, our kitchen was on the third floor. Many a time, the lid became a flying saucer and flew downstairs. Luckily, it didn't crash land on anyone, otherwise, it might be taken as an evidence as an UFO or in Singapore term, litter killer.

My kitchen is most happy when there is seafood. You need lots of hands to making it  clean and tidy, and quick cooking.

FSO: Skylines

Our winter is wet,
drab,
and cold.

October 5: Skylines
Do you see prairies of sky scrapers or something in between when you view your skyline.

Thursday Challenge,Food, chilli and how it has affected our culture.

In Singapore, I was given this habanero chilli,
I ate the chilli and germinated the seeds.
I got hundreds of chillis from my two plants.
The plant is gone but I have the photos.
The original chilli came from Mexico,
courtesy from my friend W. on his tours.
I also learnt that to beat this fireball,
sip slowly milk, giving yourself a milky moustache
or take some yoghurt. It works like magic.
This chilli is one of the best experience
that bonded us together.
We could now be in NZ, USA, Canada, Russia, India,
We laugh when we remembered being burnt
and we all had fun amongst tears.

I gave an couple in their 80s a ride .
They didn't know exactly their address.
We got lost. I stopped by a diary to ask for directions.
To make matters worse,
the dairy owner said there was no such road nearby.
The woman told me the man feels depressed
and feels confined at home, and wants to go out.
I was the second person who had taken them home.
The first time, he fell, and someone got ambulance.
They were very grateful, and invited me in, but I couldn't stay.
The driveway is sloppy  and had puddles.
It is not easy to walk.
I held his hand as he walked with a cane.
I saw her chillis, she plucked a whole lot.
They are about two inches big.
They looked like capsicums to me,
She said they were very hot.
She gave me a whole bag.
They will keep my heart warm on such cold days.

My students brought
these to see on market day
for Christchurch earthquake victims.
They told me that it is very spicy hot.
But to me, this is hardly hot at all.

Culture of food evolves
When people move
from their homeland to another.
In 1907, my dad's grandfather
 left China for Borneo.
During this century,
five generations have been born.
Our taste of food has evolved
round the food of the region.
While we eat predominantly
 Chinese food,
We have grown from
don't eat chilli,
wrong handling will
make you blind,
to I can't eat
without chilli.

I did a project of duality culture
 with my Ethiopian student.
They now eat a lot of food
they didn't eat at home,.
They have given a modified name
or in some cases, simply,
" we eat,
but we don't have a name."

Alphabe-Thursday Letter T

Mt cousin Anna gave me this pack of lovely Lady Grey Twinings Tea. Usually I hear of Earl Grey. This is unusual.
A lovely mural at a public Toilet at Rocket Park.
In some countries, it is very hard to find public toilets, but in New Zealand, you see them every where.
A sign to tell there is a train crossing ahead. There are some idiots who ignore the sign and get hurt or even killed.

Theme song/save the world: Where's my cat?

These are beautiful cats that have gone
missing in a well to do suburb. Something is dodgy.

My teacher taught me this song when I was in primary school.
You can substitute the word cat for dog here.

At that time, some people did something to dogs

 which was not very PC.
The others used to tease them.
Now history is being repeated.
As a teacher, I tell the kids,
we mustn't tease others.
Oh where, oh where can he be?
With his ears cut short
And his tail cut long
Oh where, oh where can he be?
I think he went down
To the building site
To see what he could see
And in his mouth
Was a globe so bright
I wonder what could it be

Oh where, oh where
Has my little dog gone?
Oh where, oh where can he be?
With his ears cut short
And his tail cut long
Oh where, oh where can he be?
I last saw him by the bulldozer
Playing and running around
But I just can't see him there anymore
He just can't seem to be found
Perhaps the man over there will know
He may have seen him go by
Who knows where
He might have decided to go
But we've got to give it a try

Oh where, oh where
Has my little dog gone?
Oh where, oh where can he be?
With his tail cut long
Oh where, oh where can he be?
