Save our world: Rubbish at a Festival.

 Poor guys, they need musles.

I saw a big banner," Please keep our village clean." I couldn't help but remember one year I went and help educate the Zero waste. Teaching people to separate their waste, and recycle. 40 tonnes of rubbish goes to landfill out of Pasifika alone.  There were lots of big drums, but no signage, asking people to separate their waste.

Contrast this to the few Zero waste I had been to be part of.

Those were tiring days but very meaningful ones. You see these people at the BBQ table. They are not having a picnic, but are sorting out the various types of garbage that people throw out after a festival. The back-end" of the system is the worst of the jobs. Resource Recovery Centre Manager, Chris with some volunteers have the awful job of additionl sorting of bagged waste. When we finished our part at our stations, we helped them out. I can tell you that it is no pretty sight and the smell is horrific. Yet they do it. This is why I say they are beautiful people.

Sunday Stills, the next challenge: People

Hi Ed, I post beautiful people of a different kind. They are not the type that enter beauty pageants or walk cat walks.
These photos are from my archives, because I am passionate about these beautiful people.

I gravitate towards GARBAGE and the beautiful people who have taken a stance to do something about it and preach the message and how it's impact on our environment. We belong to this Zero waste program and we are actively involved as a rubbish collector while at the same time teaching the public about recycling.

Zero-waste Strategy Management: Here's the Volunteers at work. Dressed in our official crew kowhai/yellow or kikorangi/blue T-shirt and cow boy hat, we trudged our kikorangi/blue and kakariki/green bins to our different stations.
Ngarimu on his red scooter as he went around the grounds to see if we were working well.

Zero-waste Management Strategy:
Here's the collection of the bags by some of the volunteers, including a very young boy. Ka Pai to him. They had to lug the heavy bags to the quad bikes as runners.

Scenic Sunday: Pasifika

Here I am with my ESOl srudent/friend George and his daughter Sita infront of his stall selling Tongan craft. See my Pasifika hat? I didn't like the feeling of the lei, so I wound it round my hat.

I walked more than 7 kilometers with the water engineer to the pasikifa. Auckland is the capital of the Polynesians. There a is big festival showcasing their culture, food and craft.

Photo hunt: Kirikiti

Tomorrow is Pasifika Day. More than 13 island nations assemble at Western Springs.

I was very curious about this game Kirikiti which looks like a cross between baseball and cricket. I went closer, and the players were very happy for me to take their photos. I ask my Samoan students. They say it is very popular and they play here in Auckland as church groups. They wear their lavalava, when they play. Both men and women wear their lavalava akin to the Thai and Malaysian sarongs. Only they wear them shorter.

Photo hunt: what sports do you play?

Mellow yellow: Sarikei Pineapple

In the town Sarikei, in Sarawak Borneo, where my Dad worked for some years as the Divisional Education Officer, the pineapple is the mascot.
Here is a giant ten feet tall pineapple. I have eaten lots of pineapples and believe there is none as good as the Sarawak Pineapple. Ask people from Singapore, and they will agree. Whenever I make a trip home to Sarawak, they ask me to bring some over for them.

Stay mellow with yellow!
