Two successful Second chance Stories:

I was privileged to meet two mums who had returned to university to train to be teachers. Liz Cassidy and MaryAnne Iosefa Schwenke came to Pt Chev School as trainee teachers and I struck up a friendship with them. I was impressed that they were both of Pasifika ethnicity, and they had gone to university as mothers. This is indeed a great challenge.

Ka pai to them when they were capped this year. Liz is now teaching at St Leonard's primary teaching N/E yr1 and absolutely loving it. Maryanne is doing post Graduate Studies. Paki Paki. What an inspiration and great example to the children.

When I saw their photos on their Face Book, I asked their permission to blog about them. I teach English as a second language to Pasifika children and adults, Liz and Maryanne are great inspirations especially to the young girls and grown women. I feel it was important to show my young girls that they too can succeed if they try.

MaryAnne wrote: "Thank you Ann, that's such a lovely compliment and we enjoyed your friendship and friendly smiles. As Pasifika mothers studying was a challenge that showed our children through hard work and perseverance, they can also go further in their education..I loved meeting and building friendships with all the young people including Liz and others. The support and encouragement of others through this is really important, my faith in God though was key.

Liz: You are an inspiration and a survivor

Great post, Ann! Let women study as long as possible. There are still countries where women are refused to be admitted to a school or university. This way a lot of intellectual potential is wasted.

Isn't it great that women, or anybody wants to go to school, university or tech, etc and study, regardless of age. Wonderful post and congratulations to the girls.
Cheers

Very inspiring. Really reminds us it's not to late to become the person you want to be. Kudos. :)

What a wonderful post, Ann. Unfortunately, Canada now has a prime minister who doesn't believe in women's rights. His neo-conservative party thinks women should be barefoot, pregnant, and in the kitchen. Here's hoping women like your friends will prove them wrong. Canadians now have to look to other countries for inspiration.
Thank you so much.

In reply to Kay's comment,

Sadly there will always be men who think women is not as good as men.

We just had a very controversial issue. The CEO of the Employers and Manufacturers Association made this comment: Women cannot be as good as men because of their monthly period.

It is good he got the SACK.

The board of the Employers and Manufacturers Association has dismissed its chief executive Alasdair Thompson over his controversial statements on women's workplace productivity.
