Friday shootout: Honoring Trees

This flowering cherry tree in my garden. The little fruits are not edible. What a waste.

Lining our main street, Queen street are these beautiful trees.

Sakura, Japanese Cherry Trees

Flowers that bloom in winter

The Gingko tree, the leaves are good for your memory.

The Neem tree which is regarded as a medicine for many cures. I grew this from a cutting. I left two legacies when I departed NTU, in Singapore. People come for the trees to treat ailment.

This week lets get back to our TOWNs and show off the beauty of our trees. Whether it be tropical palm trees or stately old oaks, whether the trees of our town are just beginning to bud, baby green leaves or flowering blooms, whether they are just starting to loose their leaves in preparation for the coming winter, they define our community, improve our environment, make our worlds, our towns beautiful.

(spring/Fall) Earth Day 2010 - by gingerv

Thank you gingerv. Trees are among my favourite things. I grew up in tropical Borneo, where our hard wood, the belian tree are highly demanded, and so much of the trees are fell that our endangered orang utans are threatened.

I am glad in my adopted country New Zealand, there are giant kauri and totara trees. Visitors exclaim how green Auckland is. There is a council ruling that you can't chop off a tree if it is 10 feet tall. I have posted many photos of trees in this site and my other site. http://ann-mythoughtsandphotos.blogspot.com/2009/09/cherry-blossom-sakura.html

The cherry blossoms are amazing Ann. Our neighour has a couple of cherry trees, they are so beautiful and attract such a wild variety of birds.

I could use the Ginkgo tree around here for sure. Yes it is a shame some fruit trees are just beautiful, which is good, just doesn't give any fruit. You have posted some beautiful trees at all times on your post.

We are blessed with so many lovely trees, aren't we, Ann. I've been thinking about planting a gingko, love their leaves. Might need to take some so I remember to do it. Lovely post!

trees are some of my favorite beings. I love seeing your photos of the trees. I love that rule about not cutting trees that are over ten feet!

I love the photos of the full bloom sakura, awesome! I believe the Indian use the neem leaves to treat chicken pox... or is it measles?

I love the leaf of the ginkgo tree; it is such a simple elegant shape. NZ looks very green and springlike in your pics (cherry trees!) but wait, you are probably entering autumn now. It's hard for me to imagine.

According to Ethnobotanist James Wong , you crush some gingko leaves, and steep with in hot water. Daily consumption will improve your memory/

your vegetation and mine always seem so simular - also Jama and Redlan's
We do not have cherries here but have a faux cherry that blooms in July that has a wonderful pink color - but all during the summer or rainy season it is bare of leaves - definitly on its own time table. great post.

I love trees, too, especially flowering ones like Sakura. Your Sakuras here are in full bloom.
I have never seen a Gingko. Seen them in tea form. Thanks for sharing and also for visiting my post.

I love when the cities keep trees to line their streets, it's such a neat contrast. Those cherry blossoms are beautiful and so full !!! Thanks so much for the comment on my Country Roads post, I think there might actually be some snow left on those roads, my dad was going to take his snow shoes up there this weekend!

Lots of love from Canada
