In many parts of Malaysia and Singapore, fruit growers use paper bags, plastic bags, sacks to wrap fruits to protect the fruits. Hence reduce the need to spray insecticide. These fruits are healthier to eat.

When I was living in Singapore, I was told wrapping the fruit aka saronging the fruits, it reduces another kind of pest, the two legged type. I was living in the staff residence of the Nanyang Technological University. I grew beautiful papayas and bananas and they went walking before I was fast enough to harvest them. A Malay cleaner told me to sarong them. The logic behind this was traditionally, in the kampong, fruit trees were communal. Anyone was free to harvest the fruits. But saronging/wrapping it, this signals to others that this tree is private. I worked. You need only to sarong one fruit.

In Bukit Lan near Sibu there is a place where ex-prisoners try to make a living by growing fruits...and one fruit is banana. They sarong the bananas...and the farm has a new name..."Farm where bananas wear blue skirts". Blue plastic bags are used...I have not blogged about it yet though I have taken the photos...You have gone first...so I'll wait a while...
It is news to me about the ownership of a wrapped fruit. thanks.

I couldn't believe my eyes at first!! But doesn't the fruit need sunlight to flourish? Or is it alright as long as the leaves get sun?

It needs times and effort to wrap many fruits; but the results will make you smile :)

There's lot of mango trees along our streets, and no many people dare to take the fruits except the foreign workers pruning the trees.

What a fascinating concept...I wonder how I wrap my corn stalks and my tomato plants. I will have to give that one some serious thought. Love your shots. They give a vivid image of exactly what you are taking about. Genie

Sorry...want to comment again. In the Iban longhouse community there is a lot of respect for property rights. My father in law's durian trees bear fruits and all neighbours recognise the dropped fruits as his. They even inform him a few have dropped in the morning. Hence it is 120% safe ..there is no theft of fruits in this particular longhouse in the last 70 years. If there is a theft...it is defintely done by an outsider or stray personality....Every one can vouch for this...a longhouse assembly will be called if a theft is discovered and justice will be carried out. It is indeed amazing and may be unbelieveable in the modern society.
