Friday Shootout: Plaza

Thank you Redlan for this challenge, I had posted others photos on this occasion in November when we had protest marches in support of the school support staff. Here I feature two areas which I guess could be called plazas.

Most peaceful marches in Auckland start at Queen Elizabeth Square because of it's strategic location. This square is an entry to the Britomart Transport Centre and the start of Queen Street. It is in the vicinity of the Ferry Terminal. This transitory paved area features a Kauri forest and a fire boulder water feature. Otherwise, it is a square in the downtown where people sit and have their lunches. In our very own The Apprentice, one team chose this location to sell their sausages and won.

The marches proceed up the main street, Queen street. They finish at Myers park. Myers Park is a narrow park in central Auckland, New Zealand, running parallel to the upper part of Queen Street. It is characterised by steep, grassed slopes and canopied with a mixture of large exotic and native trees, including an alley of large palm trees. Benches and artwork (including a heritage marble copy of Michelangelo's sitting Moses statue) line the paths connecting to Queen Street, K Road, Grey's Avenue and Aotea Square.

Here the tired marchers sit or lie on the grass to listen to speeches and have BBQs.

February 19, Town plaza by Redlan

It's an honor for me to be a host this week’s FSO.

DSC_3926 Plaza is a Spanish word related to "field" which describes an open urban public space, such as a city square. It’s the space where a large crowd gathers during public occasions or crisis. The plaza remains a center of community life that is only equaled by the market-place. In modern usage, a plaza can be any gathering place on a street or between buildings, a street intersection with a statue. It’s a center of a town/city or a certain place.

Thanks again. I am excited to see everyone's town plaza photos. Redlan ( aka - Rod Gelarde)

We have a new Mayor who is actually from Sibu and may be Charles knows him...Datuk Lawrence Lai.

I hope that was a peaceful gathering and the objectives had been achieved after all the hard work.

Ann, finally we have a (sort of) similar take on a topic. I usually notice how different our takes are for two people who don't live that terribly far apart, except for the urban/rural difference. I didn't know that about protest marches!

Not just a town plaza but a place that people use and where they congregate.

Very impressive Ann.

Looks like these plazas are beautiful and actively used places. It's good to see that many people out there supporting their schools, too!

What a great theme this has been. For some reason, for me, it really shows the differences in our towns more than most.

In Malaysia they would have been sprayed with chemicals from cannons mounted on trucks, clubbed with truncheons, and given liberal doses of tear gas.NZ is a land where democracy is taken for granted
